I live in Aarhus, the second largest city in Denmark but on a global scale not much more than an average village. I’m lucky to have nature close by as even a short walk brings me to local lakes, open land and forest. I bring my camera with me on shorter or longer walks almost every day and I continue to be amazed at how the seasons, the light and my own mood affect what I see and how I see it.
My second home is in Lønstrup on the rough vest coast of Jutland. Here the winds come in from the ocean and constantly reshapes the sand dunes along the coast line. This is a harsh landscape in constant change that inspires humility and reminds me of my impermanence. On the rare windless days it can be enchantingly gentle, while when the wind picks up you see why all the tormented pines and sea buckthorn bushes lean to the east.
My favorite places in Denmark include the rough moorlands of Thy National Park, Kompedal Plantation, Mols Bjerge national park and the ever moving dunes of Råbjerg. Especially during spring and autumn, the coastal forest areas south of Aarhus also have their charm with the colorful roof of beech leaves.
Although I like to travel and have been to many places around the globe, it is the Nordic landscape, climate and seasons that appeal to me the most. The way the landscape, sky and light changes with the seasons, the fragile morning sun and glowing evening sky – it’s magic!
